The exhibition project abandoned positions deals with the Iraq war of 2003 and its direct and indirect consequences for the region and Europe. Between 2015 and 2018, Sebastian Hirn and Lisa Hörstmann interviewed activists (who had travelled to Iraq in 2003 with the aim of preventing the invasion), Iraqi refugees, aid workers, journalists and American Iraq war veterans. In a compilation of interviews, documentary film and sound material, lines of development are shown that range from the reorientation of American foreign policy after the collapse of the Soviet Union to the political situation of the present. The exhibition gives space to the different, sometimes contradictory perspectives and experiences and lets them stand side by side without comment. Visitors are given the opportunity to form their own opinions beyond the conventional reporting of this controversial military operation of 2003.
The research was made possible by the Spielart Festival, the cultural department of the state capital Munich, the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Europe, the Santa Fe Art Institute (New Mexico) and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (Omaha, Nebraska).
